An extremely dedicated, small core group of volunteers led by around-town gardener Debbie Spangler, relocated and transformed our former butterfly garden into a living, breathing visual delight! New plants arrive and grow and become butterfly incubators. The butterflies are everywhere! It is a joy to behold.
Like many things, our Butterfly Sanctuary began as an idea that grew larger each time we imagined it. “Wouldn’t it be great if it had this” became the mantra, and before we knew it, the idea had grown so large, it simply could not be contained.
CHEC’s Butterfly Sanctuary is designed to protect our native butterfly populations as they suffer from habitat loss, pesticides, herbicides, pollution, and competition from introduced species, among other things. Additionally, the walk-through enclosure is designed to captivate, inspire appreciation, and create meaningful interactions. For our visitors, the Sanctuary is an interactive conservation project, where the positive outcomes are likely to flutter down from nectar plants and alight on your shoulder or hand.
With the help of the community, we are able to expand pollinator habitat and release native butterflies back into the environment, restoring populations lost to environmental degradation. Insects recycle nutrients, keep pests in balance and disperse seeds. Pollinators and soil-improving insects also make irreplaceable contributions to agriculture.
Beauty abounds! Enjoy a peaceful, restorative visit in a magical locale.

We will continue to fundraise for the ongoing maintenance and expansion of the Sanctuary through native plant nursery sales and the sale of other butterfly-related items. Stay tuned!
